Episode 17: Perfectly Good Podcast – Lady Robots Part 1

PrintThis week we venture deep into a classic Tripod show “Lady Robots”. But so thorough is our re-telling of the tale that we decide to present this in-depth discussion in two parts. HERE IS PART 1.

In this episode we hear live performances of “This Is My Last Transmission”, and in a uncharacteristic error, we hear a(nother) live version of “Someday The Lord” (first heard on this podcast back in Episode 3!). Sometimes a cappella can not be contained to one single performance… How good is Tripod’s a cappella this time? Only Poggo can lay down his righteous judgement.

And of course, this episode would not be complete without reviewing how our intrepid Merch Captain Gatesy is doing with the veritable landslide of merch orders he received since last episode. He was not in a good way when we found him…

Episode Notes:

00:00 – The orders never stopped, and neither did Gatesy’s mind as it slowly slid into Merch-Madness™

8:30 – There we are, it only took eight and a half minutes to get to the introduction of topic of the show. Tight!

13:21 – Yon’s stack hat has pride of place in the Tripod Clubhouse

15:52 – Haven’t been to PAX Aus? Check it out HERE!

17:40 – Bonus Song!

18:34 – Let’s start from the top with ACT 1, as retold by the lovely Yon.

19:41 – End of ACT 1, Begin ACT 2

20:33 – Live performance of This Is My Last Transmission

32:10 – Poggo sets a trap…

33:06 – Write in on Twitter or Facebook if you think that was even vaguely a harmonica.

34:38 – Live performance of Someday The Lord

38:04 – Apologies for redoing a tune we have heard before. Tripod will be disciplined later.

38:34 – It’s Andrew from the FUTURE, ready to be a jerk.

39:33 – OK ok… that was pretty darn good, especially given Yon had to pick those starting notes out of nowhere.

44:43 – Gatesy’s Merch Corner BUMPER. This time it’s short and to the point. We mark Gatesy on his progress.

52:27 – It’s a new stock BUMPER – T-SHIRTS! Check out Tripod’s merch store here:

Episode 16: Perfectly Good Podcast – Songs in an Hour

Print We made a promise back in Episode 15, and now it’s time to make good on that promise! This week we look at “Song in an Hour”, its history and some of the results of those”hours”, with finished products like “Surfers Paradise The Musical” (not from the book – GASP!), “Kevin Bacon” (also not in the book – DRAMATICALLY DRAWS BREATH!) and “Boggyman” (is in book – EXHALES). A wonderful portal into a bygone era of Tripod.

Speaking of bygone eras – Tripod have vacuumed the club house and discovered endless hidden merch-gems. Many in formats that are STILL VALID TODAY! Gatesy starts a business as a result… (you can hit it up RIGHT HERE).

Show Notes:

00:00 – Yep, we recorded this on Census Night. Tripod were not responsible for the DOS attack.

04:27 – It was Episode 15 Poggo. Geez.

07:45 – Discover the “Principals of Song In An Hour”. Follow these laws at home.

16:42 – A neck like this guy.

21:38 – Recorded performance of Surfers Paradise The Musical from About An Hour Of Song-In-An-Hour…AgainHipsterPack

50:14 – It’s Gatesy’s Merch Corner WITH NEW BUMPER**

Episode 15: Perfectly Good Podcast – Love

PrintThere’s been one thing missing from Perfectly Good Podcast for all these episodes, and that, friends, is LOVE. The Beatles once said it was all you needed but that doesn’t stop Yon from making sure that Poggo will never feel its sweet embrace EVER.

It’s a LOVEly episode featuring such LOVEly hits as “Love Song”, “Gonna Make You Happy Tonight” (in a brand new time signature) and “DILF”.

We also hit up the ever-popular Cyber-Bag™ and narrowly avoid a law suit. What more could one want out of LOVE?

Episode Notes:

00:00 – This is what every episode is like – Tripod talking shit before Poggo gives them a talking to before pressing record. AMAZING BEHIND THE SCENES INSIGHTS.

17:55 – It’s the Cyber-Bag! And it is introduced with a valid bumper.

34:30 – The graph we speak about is below – sent in by @SamStreetr!Tripodgraph101hits

41:40 – Live performance of Gonna Make You Happy Tonight from Songs From Self-Saucing featuring a brand new time signature and “groove”.

47:20 – A little disclaimer… in the form of a BUMPER

57:34 -Live performance of DILF from Men of Substance

1:11:20 – Gatesy has a brilliant idea.

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a bumper or small business idea. Or, subscribe, rate and comment, we appreciate it greatly!

Episode 14: Perfectly Good Podcast – Dragons

PrintAfter what seems like months, the gang is finally back together in their natural habitat – sitting around a small table in a darkened room BUT in their home town of Melbourne AND at a normal time of the day. This week Tripod and Poggo decide to look a little closer into one of Tripod’s more recent theatrical shows, a show that potentially marked a turning point in their artistic direction; “Tripod versus the Dragon“.

Listen, won’t you, to tales of how the show was put together, who fought with who and just who came up with the amazing chore(ography). Featuring live performances of “Gelatinous Love” (not from the book – GASP!), “Don’t Feel Bad” (sans Elana Stone) and “I Will Still Play”.

Episode Notes:

00:00 – Everyone’s playing it! – except Tripod who had to poorly improvise this bit and guess the correct lingo

03:09 – Yon confesses a deadly sin and apologises… sort of

10:27 – Live performance of “Gelatinous Love”

17:28 – Here’s a Gelatinous Cube

29:50 – Live performance of “Don’t Feel Bad”

47:05 – And for your viewing pleasure, here is the DVD “special features” ripped to Youtube

49:23 – Yonny talks himself out of it

53:47 – Scott tunes a guitar, because he didn’t do it before hand

55:46 – Scott then attempts to tune his guitar again… *sigh*

57:12 – Live performance of “I Will Still Play”

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a bumper. Or, subscribe, rate and comment, we appreciate it greatly!

Episode 13.5: Perfectly Good Podcast – Bonus Round

PrintIn what can only be described as the “Ultimate Solo Sesh”, Poggo takes advantage of the fact that Tripod-collaborator-and-friend Austin Wintory is in the country by making a sneaky bonus episode in their hotel room in Adelaide. What could be more solo than a Tripod Podcast WITHOUT Tripod?!

Tripod are thrilled they get the week off…

Poggo and Austin look into some of the non-Tripod tracks that make up Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’s soundtrack along with checking out some of the murder ballads that haven’t made it into 101 Tripod Hits.

Episode Notes:

00:00 – Poggo would like to apologise to the wonderful people of Adelaide. Their fine city does not sound like this in real life.

12:13 – Check out Austin’s upcoming game release ABZU. He was working on the trailer during Tripod’s Adelaide show.

18:55 – Scod knocks on Poggo’s hotel room door and disturbs the flow. IT’S A SOLO SESH SCOD.

27:05 – Recording of “The Assassin Two-Step” from Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate

37:54 – Excerpt of “London is Waiting” from Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate

43:40 – Please standby whilst we re-boot the podcast…

44:33 – And we’re back… but where is Austin?

51:19 – Recording of “Give Me The Cure” (featuring Tripod) from Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate

1:00:11 – Recording of “Feasting On A Lord” (featuring Tripod) from Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate

1:08:25 – Check out more of Austin’s stuff at his website

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a bumper, we promise we’ll be back to business as usual next episode. Or, subscribe, rate and comment and tell your friends to join in the fun.

Episode 13: Perfectly Good Podcast – TGL

PrintStrap yourselves in for one of our longest episodes yet! Wait wait… don’t leave right away, it’s for good reason. In this episode Tripod and Poggo find themselves in Adelaide preparing to perform “This Gaming Life” with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra AND are joined by very special guest Austin Wintory – composer of game scores like Journey, Banner Saga and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. More people in the room than ever before? I’m sure it will be a tight show.

The team cover topics like video games they fell in love with as kids, go behind the scenes on how some of This Gaming Life was conceived and breakdown some of the murder ballads Tripod and Austin collaborated on for Assassin’s Creed.

Episode Notes:

07:44 – We chat about games that we first fell in love with, and games that made us realise that games were more than games

25:35 – Whoops! We’re joined by Scod’s delightful wife. She is much cooler than everyone and now we’re on our best behaviour

31:30 – Turns out Poggo and Austin are both correct – the Panama Canal didn’t exist until 1914, but many prospectors in the mid-1800s used this route during the California gold rush. Because the canal did not yet exist they sailed the Atlantic to Panama, crossed the isthmus either on foot, mules or boat, and then took another ship to California. Facts!

43:09 – Demo version of Does it Have Guns with synth orchestra

54:33 – Demo version of Three Seconds of Halo with synth orchestra

1:11:05 – It’s Drive King! See the music video right here!

1:18:08 – Album version of Underground from the Assassin’s Creed Syndicate album.

1:25:47 – Original demo of Underground that Austin sent Tripod

1:31:54 – Lyric inspiration from Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens

1:35:04 – Future Andrew has done it again. It’s time for “Tripod Teaches Austin to Australian”.

1:54:34 – Yes thanks Scod – if you made it this far THANK YOU!

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a bumper. Or, subscribe, rate and comment so we know how many of you made it to the end.

Episode 12: Perfectly Good Podcast – Yon

PrintSpurred on by a deep deep jealously, the team decide that it’s time for Yon’s Solo Sesh™! This time we delve deep into the psyche of what makes Yon tick, only to discover that… well, how’s about you just tune in?

In this episode we cover songs like Hot Dog Man, Nothing To See Here and a song that Tripod wrote as part of Double J’s “Writer’s Room” called Broken Heart.

Episode Notes:

00:00 – Serious, we actually had dinner before we recorded the episode. Some elements of this bit *may* not have happened however.

12:37 – The world’s most jarring pivot – let’s talk food now

18:06 – Yon and Pog formally copyright “101 Bolognese Recipes”. Place your orders today!

28:24 – Recording of Hot Dog Man from Fegh Maha

41:41 – CONTROVERSY – Poggo has changed his mind. The piece is in E MAJOR (sorry Yon).

48:12 – An awesome new bumper, sent in by an equally awesome listener!

51:44 – It’s Yon’s new segment, titled “Yon’s Personal-Dirt Couch” (including Yon-made bumper)

1:14:02 – Recording of Nothing To See Here from For The Love Of God

1:21:53 – Recording of Broken Heart from Double J’s Writer’s Room

1:34:50 – There will be no Poggo Solo Sesh™

1:35:25 – Get your tickets to This Gaming Life here.

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a bumper. Or, subscribe, rate and comment so we know how many Yon and Pog cookbooks to print.

Episode 11: Perfectly Good Podcast – Scod

PrintOn the back of a successful “Solo Sesh” with Gatesy and Poggo, Tripod decide to serve it up fresh™ with a different member of the trio. This time we get some one-on-one time with Scod, Tripod’s answer to the question “Can men with beards really play guitar”?

Not content with following a simple formula, Poggo and Scod abandon the standard format set by Gatesy (who some rate as the most successful of the previous solo session contributors) and break down two songs – one that Scod no longer likes and one he LOVES. The result? A 90min journey through harmonic and melodic nerdery!

In this episode the duo break down “Autistic” along with “Ivory Tower” and then worry whether the audience really want this level of detail. (Do you? Get back to us)!

Episode Notes:

01:50 – It’s Just The Two Of Us! But with much less rap.

02:30 – Turns out Scod WON’T be putting photos of Poggo’s house in the show notes…

14:54 – Recording of Autistic from Songs From Self-Saucing

39:45 – Recording of Ivory Tower from Tripod versus the Dragon

51:10 – Scod’s first-concept imagery/lyrics for Ivory Tower

55:57 – Scod’s second attempt at writing lyrics for Ivory Tower

1:09:41 – Megan Washington’s first demo of Ivory Tower

1:11:20 – Let’s break this down musically…

Want access to some of the material we covered (lyrics and Megan’s demo in full)? Download them here with our compliments.

Podcast Shoutout!

Check out these two great music podcasts, mentioned in the show, that break down songs.

Scod’s favourite: Song Exploder

Poggo’s favourite: Star Wars Oxygen

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a segment. Or, subscribe, rate and comment so we know how many more songs we should continue to “break down”.

Episode 10: Perfectly Good Podcast – Stopy Starty

PrintIt’s a birthday celebration! Ten episodes means a ten year anniversary yeah? I’m sure that’s how it works…

Join Tripod and Poggo on another episode of stories, songs (that start and then stop) and listener questions that are sure to delve deep into the Tripod mythos. And the theme for this episode? Why it’s Tripod’s brand of starting a song and then stopping to argue that gets the focus this week (or “Starty Stopys”). Do they work without an audience? You be the judge.

Episode Notes:

00:00 – Hey, it’s a poorly planned party!

25:20 – Live performance of Ghost Ship from Fegh Maha

56:00 – Live performance of Maryanne from Fegh Maha

1:13:54 – It’s a brand new mail bag called CYBER BAG. The future is now (including a new bumper!)

1:40:00 – It’s Gatesy’s Audio Corner (sort of)**

**Geez – there was an unbelievable static buzz throughout this whole episode that took soooo long to take out. Please enjoy it static free now…

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a segment. Or, subscribe, rate and comment so we can manage to stay “popular” and “relevant”.

Episode 9: Perfectly Good Podcast – Gatesy

PrintIn a never ending quest to deliver the most “fresh” and “exciting” content, Tripod have changed it up AGAIN and thought the best way to achieve this was not to turn up at all. For what is more pure than a podcast that contains no content BUT in some cosmic way contains ALL content as a result?!

The resulting podcast was described by our test audience as “silent”. So we did something different.

However, due to a scheduling error, and the fact that Scod and Yon have young heirs to groom in their image, responsibilities have been left to, what many say, is the best two Perfectly Good Podcast personalities. The result? The Gatesy and Pog show!!

In this episode Poggo gets up close and personal with Gatesy and finds out what really makes him tick. We asked Gatesy to provide three songs (as that is the way of things) which he considers his:

  • Favourite song that didn’t make the cut for 101 Tripod Hits
  • Least favourite song (that also didn’t make the book)
  • Favourite song that he knows the others hate, so loves it even more.

Episode Notes:

01:37 – It’s the Pog Couple!

29:50 – Gatesy and Pog receive a wonderful letter

34:00 – Gatesy’s Audio Corner anyone? Want to suggest a segment you’d like to hear? Get in touch on Twitter or Facebook.

52:40 – Recording of Dirty Power from Perfectly Good Songs

1:11:03 – Recording of The Homophobic Christmas Tree from For The Love Of God!

1:22:39 – Recording of Shiny Chin also from Perfectly Good Songs

1:36:10 – Gatesy compliments Poggo

We love to hear from you! Get in touch on Twitter and Facebook, request a song, request a theme or submit your ideas for a segment. Or, subscribe, rate and comment so we know how many Gatesy and Poggo episode we should do. It’s lots yeah?
